With just a few spare hours a week, you can easily add spare income if you start a junk removal business.
The first step is to apply for a business license. Use Google to find the website that handles business licenses. Every state has an online licensing program. The process takes 10 minutes. Most licenses are $50. Keep this license in your work truck. Some customers will ask to see your license.
Second, place an ad on Craigslist. Craigslist is perhaps the busiest resource for hauling services. Check your competitors ads. Write down their pricing. Undercut the other companies by about ten percent. New companies need to charge less to get established. You can raise your prices later. If you want to double your calls, put a photo of yourself in your ad--people want to see and trust the companies they hire.
The ad will result in calls. And emails. When you answer them, be sure to ask important questions about the quantity of the junk, (the location of the junk could be in a 3rd floor attic), the type of junk, and the customer's location. Now offer a price that makes the job worth your time. Don't forget that you have gasoline and dump expenses of $65 per job.
The final step is to do the job! If you don't have a truck, rent one from U-Haul or Home Depot for $20. Load up your truck. Leave flyers with the neighbors. There will be items that can be resold on Craigslist. Drop those off at home, clean them up, and list them on Craigslist. Take the remaining items to the dump.
It's a relatively simple service that people pay cash for, and usually pay generously. You don't even have to take on every job. If the job is too large, decline it. Avoid dangerous jobs involving harmful chemicals. Not worth the risk! There are many small and easy jobs available on Craigslist. Do a few a week and make some extra cash weekly.
